Some gems from this year - Intimacies by Katie Kitamura, Klara and the Sun by Ishiguru, Between Two Kingdoms by Suleika Jaouad, and Second Place by Cusk. Currently reading The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki which will most likely make my list of favorites.

The two Thursday Murder Club books (from this fine newsletter!) and Erik Larson's In the Garden of Beasts (not new, I know, but it's been a comfort food year).

A fave of the year: The Push by Ashley Audrain. Following the Halloween theme, I suppose, because it’s terrifying! A very fresh take on a story that’s been done—and an insanely taut and constructed page-turner. Runner-up: Real Life by Brandon Taylor, which is a sort of spiritual companion to Sally Rooney’s Beautiful World, Where Are You (similar thematically, but Taylor and Rooney’s writing styles are wayyyy different).

Real Life is one of those books that I liked a lot when I read it but the visceral violence of it hit me hard ... but the more distance I get the more I've loved it. A top read FOR SURE. (Also he is a hilarious twitter follower, unexpectedly!) I need to check out The Push - anything you recommend, I'm down for! Thanks!

Totally. Much of it was brutal! Yet it really drew me in, the interiority of the characters and some of the scenes just really pop. Want to read his short story collection and more from him! Let me know what you think of the The Push :) It's pretty genre-y yet literary and original, will be so interested to know what you think.
